September 2026 - Foin Coupé Eau de Parfum, 10mL

The Perfume of the Month for September is a vintage-inspired fragrance that is based on a classic perfumery accord of the late 19th century called Foin Coupé (pronounced “Fwahn koo-Pay), which is French for “Cut Hay”.

This was a lovely agrestic accord meant to smell like freshly mown hay. It was known for its sweet, coumaric character, accented with citrus notes, lavender, and other herbal nuances intended to evoke the scent memory of Provence, France. The Foin Coupé accord was made famous by its use in the 1886 fragrance Foin Fraîchement Coupé by Oriza L. Legrand. The success of this fragrance led to a deluge of new fragrances featuring the Foin Coupé accord, which soon became its own fragrance family, known as The Aromatic Fougère.

My version of the Foin Coupé opens with bright, juicy Bergamot and Lavender in the top, Hawthorn, Clary Sage, Geranium, and my own artisanal extraction of Hay absolute in the heart. In the base, Coumarin, Oakmoss, Ambergris, Sandalwood, and a Vegan Vintage Musk Accord create a truly timeless drydown that harkens back to the Golden Age of Perfumery.

It is fresh, sunny, and aromatic, with the sweet, dry hay tones of late summer. The Vintage Musk Accord features my own IFRA-compliant recreations of Musk Ambrette and Musk Xylene, both of which are now banned for use in perfumery. My replacers help create a truly vintage feel during the drydown while ensuring health and safety remain at the forefront of this perfumer’s mind.

Top: Bergamot, French Lavender

Heart: Hawthorn, Clary Sage, Hay Absolute, Geranium Bourbon

Base: Coumarin, Oakmoss, Ambergris, Sandalwood, Vintage Musk Accord (Vegan)
