May 2026 Perfume of the Month - Scarab Queen x ÇaFleureBon
May 2026 - Scarab Queen x ÇaFleureBon, 10mL Rollerball Bottle
ÇaFleureBon Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen has always been fascinated with powerful Egyptian Queens who often ruled alongside or alone as Pharaohs. When Michelyn approached me to collaborate once again, this time to celebrate ÇaFleureBon’s 16th anniversary, she asked me to compose a perfume using historically accurate materials available to the Pharaonic perfumers of Egypt. I was up for the challenge, very different from Lipstick Queen, yet both are transformative and incredibly wearable. Scarabs were worn as talismans of protection and played a significant role in the daily life and beliefs of ancient Egyptian Queens.
Darren Alan Perfume’s Scarab Queen x ÇaFleureBon is a fragrance that transcends gender, genre, and even time itself. Our goal was to create a perfume that may have been discovered in an ancient tomb as a scented offering to the gods. In ancient Egypt, the scarab symbolized death and rebirth, as the sun died at sunset and was reborn anew each morning.
This 100% natural perfume oil is made with historically accurate aromatics that were used in ancient Egypt. The aromatic oils are blended with a base of organic jojoba and moringa oils at 40% concentration. Unlike most modern perfumes, which are alcohol-based, the fragrances of ancient Egypt were oil-based. I am often thought of as a perfumer who specializes in the neo-vintage genre. Scarab Queen takes us back thousands of years, not just hundreds. In keeping with Egyptian tradition, which often added gemstones to their perfumes, every bottle of Scarab Queen contains a genuine piece of Lapis Lazuli, the sacred stone of the gods.
I have taken classes with renowned Egyptologist Dora Goldsmith, who specializes in the scents and perfumes of ancient Egypt, and I have put what she has taught me to good use. Scarab Queen is a perfume fit for the gods and is centered around the Sacred Blue Lotus.
It opens with energetic Juniper Berry, Lemongrass, and Camphor. The heart features an artisanal Blue Lotus Flower extraction made in-house by Darren Alan Perfumes. I used over 20 kilos of rare Blue Lotus Flowers that yielded just enough to create this batch of perfume.
The exotic fragrance of Blue Lotus is floral, green, slightly spicy, and intoxicating, with a watery and musky undertone. It’s unlike any other flower used in perfumery. Beeswax absolute, resinous Frankincense, and Benzoin bridge the heady Blue Lotus with the dark and rich base of rectified Sweet Flag, Myrrh, and Nut Grass.
I followed the practice of the ancient Egyptians, who used a system of fractions based on the proportions of the Eye of Horus to measure recipes for medical formulas. I immediately knew I had to apply this mathematical formula to the creation of Scarab Queen.
Instead of deciding on proportions based on traditional perfume-making knowledge or olfactory considerations, I structured the ingredients in Scarab Queen according to ancient Egyptian numerology and followed the fractions of the Eye of Horus. The result was not only a perfectly balanced perfume, but also one that was inherently IFRA-compliant.
